Post MIT plans to offer free online open education
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesmarsha ... n-for-all/

now this is very, very interesting. in addition to their existing online study courses, apparently MIT are considering launching "an online learning initiative called M.I.T.x,which will offer the online teaching of M.I.T. courses free of charge to anyone in the world."

the catch is that you don't get an actual MIT degree from it, but rather an M.I.T.x specific certificate, but it mentions they will accept anyone, as opposed to MIT itself which has the usual draconian selection process typical of big, famous unis.

thoughts?

sounds pretty cool, but I don't really see what advantages it offers over enrolling in a course at open university. Not that I would be able to complete the course- I'm more of a 'chop trees down, lift heavy thing' type of person.

Not to seem like a grouch, but generally you get what you pay for.

besides, it's also a matter of what you CAN pay for. internet connections are cheaper than college tuition
