Post Rest - your personal thoughts?
I'ma big advocate of resting when sore - not tender, straight up sore, but there are quite a few folks out there who advocate training regardless of pain indicative of muscular damage. So, after a conversation I had this weekend, I was curious as to where the rest of you fall in terms of training through soreness (again, not stiffness or tenderness) or resting?

If im sore i dont work out that body part. but if i have sore legs i will still run cause it seems to make them feel better...atleast for the time being :)

I'm good with that. I've been a fan of light cardio or stretching to help relieve DOMS. :aok:

I thought active rest was the best way, like still working out but with a much lighter load and stuff, so the muscles don't seize up but they don't get too overworked as well.

My understanding is that exercise is catabolic but the rest is anabolic. As such I am working hard to attain 100% rest and minimise that nasty catabolic exercise.

There is no start to the depth of my fitness knowledge.

P.s. Board guru or not, I'm still not revealing the secret to alternating BB curls!

If it lasts for more than a day or so, I tend to just work out regardless. There's only so long you can delay for.

So even if you're still sore to the touch you'll force yourself to function? Not picking on you, just trying to make sure I understand.

No, that would be a bit ridiculous. I think it's important to learn to listen to your body when it comes to rest periods.

Ok, WHEW, glad I asked!

I used to workout near a guy (lol) that always said being sore doesnt matter, if your muscles could still contract they could still lift. I remember he was so sore after a squat workout once that come the next leg day he was still having trouble walking right... but he wrapped his knees and got in there anyway. Didn't see him for a whole week after that and I always wondered, wouldnt it have been more beneficial to simply miss leg day but get the rest of your workouts in for the week than push leg day to "stay on schedule" but miss everything else?

Yeah, I mean you really want to keep doing workouts regularly- if you're too sore to work out as per the program, you're probably doing something wrong I would say.

that brings up a good point, KE! Intensity vs frequency. Is it better to train a little less hard, but be able to maintain a set schedule or to go positively balls out and then train only as your body allows?

A dilemma I often face with karate. There's a class tonight that's free, but it's more intense and come tomorrow I won't be able to take part in my primary class, which costs £3 but is to my mind more beneficial, the teacher does things in a way that you learn things inside and out. That class happens only once a week, but the other is three times a week. Decisions, decisions.

Not strictly relevant, but in the same vein to the frequency/intensity train of thought.
